CALCUTTA (India): Mohun Bagan have clinched the I-League 2019-20 season after they registered a 1-0 win over Aizawl FC at the Kalyani Municipality Stadium near here on Tuesday evening.
Baba Diwara scored the all important goal in the 80th minute to kick off celebrations.
The Green and Maroons have collected 39 points from 16 matches this season with 12 wins and one defeat.
Both the teams had played out a goalless draw in the first phase while Bagan suffered their only defeat (4-2) against Churchill Brothers.
However, the Mariners fought back into contention and showed remarkable improvement after each match.
Spanish coach Kibu Vicuna, who was under pressure after Bagan’s woeful start to the campaign in the competition.
But his positive attitude and a full-proof plan deserve all the plaudits, and they topped it up with a 2-1 win over East Bengal in the Calcutta derby.
Since then, they have been in sublime form as they also won the bragging rights in the Kolkata derby with a 2-1 victory.
