LONDON: Former England Test captain Joe Root has ruled himself out of contention for the team’s white-ball captaincy, stating that the opportunity has passed following Jos Buttler’s resignation.
England is searching for a new limited-overs skipper after Buttler stepped down in the wake of their disappointing Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan, where they lost all three matches. Despite the setback, Root remains confident that the team will recover from their poor performance.
When asked about the white-ball captaincy, Joe Root told Sky Sports on Friday: “I don’t think so. I believe that ship has sailed. I’ve had my time as England captain.
“But I’m sure whoever takes on the role will be incredibly proud and will do a fantastic job.
“The Champions Trophy was disappointing—we didn’t perform anywhere near our potential—but there’s immense talent in that team, and I believe there’s much more to come.”
The 30-year-old is now focused on the upcoming home Test series against India, starting June 20, and the Ashes in Australia from November 21, where he hopes to secure his first series win after previous defeats.
