BENGALURU: South Africa survived a late charge from Pakistan to pull off a thrilling 1-wicket win here on Friday to move closer to the semis of the World Cup.
Aiden Markram hit a solid 91 and at 206-4 South Africa were well on course to comfortably chase down a 271-run target.
However, it was left to the last pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi to score 11 runs, who took their side across the finish line with 16 balls to spare.
Chasing a tricky 271 for victory, the South African tail enders held their nerves in a tense finish, taking their side across the finish line with 16 balls to spare.
The defeat pushed Pakistan closer to elimination as Babar Azam and co. have now lost four matches in succession after winning their first two.
This is now South Africa’s first World Cup win against Pakistan since the 1999 edition while Babar Azam’s men’s fourth loss on trot is country’s first in global event.
Pakistan are on four points from six games and even if they win all three games, there is less than five percent chance of them qualifying for the last four stage.
