DUBAI: The UAE Pro League has recommended that the 2019-20 season not be continued following a meeting on Wednesday.
The 2019-20 Arabian Gulf League (AGL) has been cancelled, with an extraordinary general assembly meeting called for Thursday to determine the implications of the decision in consultation with the UAE Football Association.
The UAE Pro League was halted in March due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The AGL was suspended on March 15, 19 rounds into the season, as the UAE sought to restrict the spread of the coronavirus.
At the time, Shabab Al Ahli topped the standings with seven match-days left to play, six points ahead of second-placed Al Ain. A provisional date was then set in late April for the league’s resumption in August.
During the meeting, the committee decided to not continue the matches of the UAE Arabian Gulf League and U-21 League in the 2019-2020 season.
The meeting was headed by Abdullah Nasser Al Junaibi, Chairman of the Committee, in the presence of Jamal Hamid Al Marri, Vice President of the Committee, Mohammed Obaid Al Yamahi, Hassan Talib Al Marri, Tariq Ali Al Shabibi, Saeed Obaid Al Kaabi, Jawaher Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, The meeting was also attended by committee members Walid Al Hosani, Executive Director, and Dr. Khaled Mohammed Abdullah, Business Development Consultant.
Among the issues to be discussed on Thursday will be the impact of the cancellation on next season’s AGL.
There is support to increase the competition by two clubs to 16, with Emirates Club and Dibba Al Hisn, who occupy the two lead spots in the First Division, joining the top flight. The FA governs the second tier. (Source: AFC/The National)
